Funk E

If you've ever experienced the electrifying sensation of being struck by raw energy that anchors you firmly in the present moment, chances are you've encountered one of Funk E's productions. Whether released under his own name, cloaked in peculiar aliases, or in collaboration with his studio companions, Funk E leaves an indelible mark on the electronic music landscape. Laurentiu, known by his real name, boasts solid roots as a DJ, having originated in the post-communist, newly-blossomed Romanian hip-hop culture. It was in the early 2000s that he first savored the sweet allure of techno. In 2004, he made a pivotal move to Ibiza, transforming the island into the ideal nurturing ground for his electronic alter ego, a journey that spanned a remarkable 12 years. Firmly embracing tech house for his extended DJ sets, Funk E swiftly became a regular presence in Bucharest's selective afterparty circuit. He also secured coveted residencies at Ibiza's Zoo Project daytime events and the intimate Underground, maintaining these roles throughout his extended tenure on the island that never sleeps. Drawing inspiration from the tranquil winters of Ibiza, when time seems to stand still, Funk E embarked on his production journey around 2008. Armed with an old Emu MP7 hip-hop groovebox, he ingeniously tamed it to craft techno beats that have since evolved into his distinctive signature sound – a bassline-driven groove that directly targets our electronic central nervous system. Esteemed labels like Adult Only, Raum...musik, Kurbits, Pleasure Zone, and The Rabbit Hole have proudly featured Funk E in their catalog. When he yearned to express his musical concepts with greater freedom, a new venture was born: Great Empty Circle. This is his very own imprint, established in 2015, exclusively dedicated to his compositions, including those released under the Bhikkhu and Marvin Gain aliases. As a conscious explorer of both inner and outer worlds, Funk E has embarked on tours that have taken him to every corner of the globe, crossing the Equator line on multiple occasions. His performances captivate audiences, grounding them in the present moment while transporting their dreams to his imaginative electronic realm. The dawn of 2017 ushered in new challenges and exciting developments. Funk E was featured in the Sunwaves Festival lineup, performing alongside friends Xandru and Pitik, who together form Getic Funk – a well-known production effort and a collective of record selectors. Additionally, under the moniker Naf Naf (with Narcis), they released their first EP, further solidifying their presence in the ever-evolving world of electronic music.
